John and I may pass on the show in Edina. He finally managed to get in
touch with them to ask about his booth space and ask about parking and they
said, "Parking?" Uh, yeah, for the truck? They said, "Truck?" Um, yeah,
you know, to haul in my paintings. Paintings? UH OH. Looks like
Centennial Lake is a "crafters" show, not an art show. You can usually tell
by the application but he's never done this show before. I don't know how
else you'd haul in 6 foot paintings without a truck... apparently they
didn't, either.

So it seems we may just wander around downtown Minneapolis, hang out for a
couple of days and then head to Davenport. Meanwhile, we'll have fun
downtown at the Rock Bottom Brewery and here's the what I posted 3 years ago
for their Asiago cheese dip:

The waiter at Rock Bottom Brewery in downtown Minneapolis was kind enough to
give me this recipe. The dip was to die for and the toasted bread was
excellent. However he said, "The bread is a pain in the hiney to make [I
swear he said hiney, twice] - it's easier to buy some party rye or thinly
sliced party wheat, then butter and toast it and then have at the dip."

Asiago Cheese Dip

4 oz. sundried tomatoes
4 minced green onions
4 oz. button mushrooms, thinly sliced
6 oz. shredded asiago cheese
3 oz. cream cheese
1 qt. sour cream
1 c. mayonnaise
[I'd add a clove or two of minced garlic]

Place sundried tomatoes in a bowl and cover with hot water. Soak until
completely soft (about 4 hours); drain and julienne. Add chopped onions,
mushrooms and shredded asiago cheese.

In a separate bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise and cream cheese. Blend
well. Place together with the asiago mixture in a double boiler and stir
occasionally until cheese is thoroughly melted.

Rock Bottom Beer Bread
1/3 oz. salt
1/2 oz. baking powder
1/5 lb. grated cheddar cheese
1/5 lb. sugar
1/8 lb. diced sweet red peppers
1/8 lb. chopped scallions
2 cups lager beer

Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl. Mix in cheese, peppers and
onions. Add 1-1/2 c. beer; mix well. Add remaining 1/2 c. beer and combine
thoroughly. Bake in a preheated 300F degree oven for 1 hour.

NOTE: This recipe does not specify forming the loaf into a long thin
baguette-like shape, but that is what they do at the Rock Bottom. When
ready to serve, they cut it into thin slices, brushed with melted butter and
toast it. Served with the dip, it is fantastic.

Why don't you guys wander down to Albert Lea and go to that cook-in?

We won't be there that weekend. I don't fly out of here until 9/6.

Remember, they were talking about changing the weekend, so you guys
could come down... At least that is my recollection.

I'll check with John... he has specific plans to meet me at the airport on
9/6; the show was supposed to be the 9th and 10th and then we'd drive down
to Iowa on the 11th.

The cook-in is the 9th. For out of towners, there are usually
appetizers on Friday night, and brunch on Sunday.

We're right on the way to Iowa.

If I drove down...would you be on the way back to Manitoba or still on

I worked directly next door to the Rock Bottom Brewery for 7 years and I ate
so damned much of that asiago dip with beer bread. Goodness, I haven't had it
since 2000 when I quit the theatre! Good stuff, though.

Not if we take Highway 61 (we'd planned to stay off the Interstate) which
goes straight towards Davenport He was probably just letting off steam
about not doing the show, unless it's physically impossible to get his truck
in there. But I'll check with him and let you know!

I wondered about that - the big outdoor art shows have already happened
(three last weekend and the Edina show in early June.) Too bad it
wasn't clear. I hope it didn't cost him a lot to apply.

Unfortunately, it did cost. And they had to have approved the slides he
sent so surely they knew he's a painter! I hope they'll refund his fees if
he decides not to do the show.

Weird. Has he ever applied for Uptown, Edina, Powderhorn?
How do you differentiate between a craft show and an art show?

The last show he (we) did in the Minneapolis area was 3 years ago at a
stretch along the river close to that big liquor store (Syrdyks?) Lots of
restaurants along that stretch. (Not sure what the show was called but I
think Uptown is a different show and he hasn't done that one in about 5
years.) The promoter of this particular show, however, had quit and
apparently the restaurants got involved because you couldn't get anything to
eat (no food vendors). I can see the point of the restauranteurs, but at
one place I recall it was about $10 for a hamburger and some fries. One
couple who bought some of his work went out and brought us back a pizza!
He's never done a show in Edina before.

He tells me the application usually gives a clue about whether or not it's
an art show because you have to specify your medium and submit slides for
the jury. I don't know the apps are worded but [he says] the big clue is if
there are a lot of categories listed such as small pieces of pottery,
clothing items, bird houses and other "crafty" type things, he can usually
tell. On the other hand, if the application lists more things such as
paintings - oil, paintings - water, paintings - acrylics, photography, blown
glass, etc. it's more of an art show. Nothing at all wrong with crafts
fairs, mind you! However, someone who's buying $10 tie-dye t-shirts and
funny little hand-made felt hats for the kiddies isn't likely to shell out
big bucks for an original oil.

OB Food: Maybe cream of broccoli soup but I'll have to buy some cream
I'll decide later... gotta use up the last of the broccoli so I'm torn
between a pot of soup or a "hot dish" type thing with noodles, broccoli and
cheese.

That's the big one. In general, the "arts" vs. "crafts" labels have a
huge amount of overlap (indeed, one of the best well-juried art shows
around New England is the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen's Annual
Craft Fair, although you won't find much of anything that you'd find
at most art faris), but in general an "Art Fair" will be juried, have
detailed categories for the fine arts, and have a selection committee
to make sure that there's not 35 painters in 40 boothes. And a good
fair will also usually mix up the artists a bit, so that the best
potters and painters and such aren't directly across from each other.

I know Jill's pain, since the artist I rent studio space from for my
throwing I actually met at a tacky craft fair in Hanover, NH, which
had been sold to the artists as an art fair. Nothing like putting
together a set of jury slides, putting together your booth, and then
finding at the fair that he was literally wedged between a person
selling popsicle stick Santas, a person reselling furs directly from
the Cabella's catalog, and a person pitching business opportunities
for one of the "paint your plate" franchises. Entirely not his target
market (people buying popsicle stick santa's aren't going to be buying
hundred-dollar vases), but he did manage to find several other artists
to take classes and rent studio space from him.

Yep! I couldn't remember the name of the bridge! He's going to give that
one another shot next year. We can always bring our own food It was a
good show for him. We also were invited for cocktails by one of his repeat
patrons in her lovely condo overlooking the river. Wine, beer, cheeses and
the like on the patio. Good company, lots of laughs. Next thing we knew,
the hostess uncovered a big gas grill and asked, "How does everyone want
their burgers?" So we had a lovely time with some really fun people.

Exactly! All the shows he does are juried. He's sat on a few juries
himself over the years. They want a good mix of all the mediums.

And a good

Another excellent point. The planners have to know how to assign the booth
space properly. In a perfect world, they want their artists to be happy and
do well.

Eeek! Yeah, the same sort of thing happened when we did the show in
Huntsville, AL in 2005. Panoply. It was mostly crafters so lots of people
were buying little gewgaws but they certainly were not the fine art crowd.
He'd done this show about 10 years prior. But this time they'd moved it to
another location - basically a "you can't get there from here" location.
Streets all around were closed due to construction. And! they decided to
charge admission for the first time. No one working for the show knew what
the hell they were doing. It was horrid. We tore down early. Never again.
