Default What sort of lizard is Basil?

He looks quite edible :-)

If you've ever been to Malaysia and had 'Gecko Pie', you'll know what I
mean :-)

is that some sort of euphemism??? Is there something about Malaysia I should
know about?

Speaking of...
David and I caught 2 baby anoles while I was down in NOLA, and since I left he
caught one more baby anole and a teeny tiny baby gecko! He's bringing them
home this weekend. They're living in a 20 gallon aquarium right now but I have
a 55 gallon aquarium to set up as home for them. I'm very excited!

They have very *large* geckos throughout Asia. They are a food source.

We used to buy these small pies off of a local vendor, and thought they
were quite good even if the meat in them didn't look like beef. After a
couple, we asked the vendor what they were and in broken English we were
told 'Gecko Pie'. A couple of guys never bought them again. I liked them
:-)

Do you mean "basilisk"? That's a kind of lizard. It can run across
water. Don't know if they're considered good eats (tm).

Nope. Just the plain ol gecko.

Saw some *huge* ones in Bali, and whilst the SO and kids all "Ohhhhh'd"
and "Ahhhhh'd" I was thinking about how many pies I could make out of
them :-)

He looks like some sort of striped skink, but not knowing where the
photo was taken, I can't identify him.

I thought he was talking about Pandora's Basil... the lizard she has that
lives in her Basil plant. I think it was suggested he was a Alligator
Lizard.

Will they get this big?

It's my neighborhood's own personal species.

That's the best picture I've ever seen of one.

Actually, that guy's site is full of really good pictures.

I remember visiting my friend's friend in his apartment and he had two
small lizards that he tethered to a chair in his living room. When he
wanted to show them, he just "reeled in" the strings. He also had a pet
tarantula that he played with while we were there, letting it walk up his
arm, replacing it to the back of his hand.

One of the strangest things I have ever seen!

Bit hard training it to sell insurance when I don't sell insurance
myself.

The only training it needed was "How to become the protein source in
Peter's meat pie in one easy lesson" :-)

Oh, Horrors!!! You are the kind of degenerate who would eat Chocolate
Bunnies at Easter and Chocolate Santa Clauses at Christmas. Perhaps
also little Marzipan Piglets on New Year's Eve. The ones with the
shiny new pennies in their snouts.

Basil is a member of our RFC Family!!! I am too shocked to address
this kind of behavior. (

Just thinking of eating Peeps has to seem depraved. They are too
cute. Besides, they probably taste like Marshmallows, not a culinary
recommendation.

However, it started with someone by the name of Blair suggesting that
our beloved Mascot, Basil the Lizard, should be enjoyed in a lizard
pie, not just loved for the happiness it brought to us when it
appeared in Pandora's Basil Patch on her terrace on the second floor
of the house in which she lives.

I wondered whether Blair also eats Chocolate Easter Bunnies and
Chocolate Santa Clauses and Tammy wanted to know whether he tortures
sweet little Peeps. That's all there is to this. Except that Andy
has a guilty conscience, as he thought I was accusing him. )

I am making Cucumber Salad. I went to a local Farmer's Market, a tiny
one with only two booths and bought six cukes. We will have enough
for at least two dinners.

The flavor depends on the coloring. The yellow tastes like popcorn, the
purple more like grape, etc.. A conspiracy theory of mine.

Blair probably eats the bunny ears and throws the rest away. And BTW. my
guilty concsience only extends as far back as my last meal!

I've had great success with your cucumber and onion salad recipe. I mince
the onions nowadays so they mix easier and don't become a tangled glob.

Doesn't it seem more likely that Blair would eat the inside of
a hollow Easter bunny?

I make it the Viennese way. Very thinly sliced peeled cucumbers and I
look for young, thin ones, so that there are no tough seeds in the
salad. I slice them on an old four-sided metal slicer, on the side
that has the Mandolin slits. After each additional cucumber, I
sprinkle a little salt on the slices and mix them, so the salt is
distributed. I use very little salt.

When all the cukes are sliced, I cover the bowl and let it stand, so
that some of the liquid is released. After an hour or longer, I pour
off the accumulated liquid, pressing more out with my hands. I taste
the salad to see whether it is too salty (in case that happens, wash
off some of it) or needs a little more. Next, I mix in a pinch of
sugar, something like 1/4 teaspoon full for four cucumbers.

I slice a small onion or part of one as thinly as possible and add it,
or, as I much prefer, I cut up a couple of scallions, greens and all
and add them. Plain white vinegar, NO OIL, if you want, a sprinkling
of white or black ground pepper. Just before serving, I sprinkle a
tiny bit of Sweet Paprika on the cucumber salad.

Default What sort of lizard is Basil?

nancy,

The oddsmakers are hard at work on the figures. They're leaning towards
10:1 but the final results will be in tomorrow's paper.

We have them set up in temporary digs until we get the 55 gallan tank set up.
I have to get pictures posted. 3 anoles names Stinkwingo, Grellow and
Spottiswood and a house gecko named Chicken (david doesn't like that name but
he made the mistake of letting me pick the name...)

The house gecko named Chicken
http://www.velvet-c.com/images/chicken.jpg

and one of the 3 anoles (this is grellow, but at this stage they pretty much
all look the same)
http://www.velvet-c.com/images/grellow.jpg
I have to figure out how to photograph the anoles without washing them out so
much with the flash.

Whichever part was made by Callebaut, it's mine.
