Default We have no banana chile peppers!!!

I drove in to Philly to the Reading Terminal Market. Bad idea. There was
an Amish festival going on and it was packed with people! Busier than
I've ever seen it. Out of four small produce stands, no banana chile
peppers!

I did find a jar of palm sugar, completing the authenticity of my Thai
chicken satay recipe. It's a dark brown coconut sugar (I did not know
this!).

They blocked off part of Arch street and put out chairs and bales of hay
for the audience to watch live music. I watched an Amish bluegrass band
belt out a few songs. Made up of banjo, mandolin, standup bass and two
guitars. They were great!!! There was also a hayride pulled by two mini
ponies for the kids!

Had a cup of the great Amish cucumber salad and a glass of bud light and
left.

Drove over to the Italian Market, stopping first at Pat's King of Steaks
for a cheesesteak. It was as bad as I remembered them. I didn't even
finish it! The BUMS!!!

Walked the entire market and nobody had banana chile peppers!!!

I tried, dammit.

You can use brown sugar just as well.

retailers run by many different people. The beergarten is run by a couple

I will. I just couldn't give up without exhausting the two best chances
in Philly, first.

I'll visit Amish country next week. I'm leaning towards doubtful but it's
always worth going for all the other harvests. It's only an hour away!

You were within a few blocks of some great Vietnamese markets (where you
would have found the peppers and lots of asian goodies) and Pho
restaurants at that point. When I am in that area I skip the touristy
"deuling cheesesteak" places and have great Pho on Washington.

There are 2 Vietnamese "shopping centers" on Washington. One is 2 blocks
over from the Italian market and the other maybe 8 blocks east.

Well up here the pickle company...Bicks...makes Banana peppers and most
every grocery store chain carries the Pickled Banana Peppers.

Bicks also makes dill pickles, pickled onions, relishes and a mess of
other pickled stuff.

ABSOLUTELY!!! That's my favorite produce market!!! They're my first stop!
I've been a customer for ages! ))

Then there's Produce Junction in Broomall's Lawrence Park. Not thrilled
with their "call out and we'll pick your veggies" strategy, but $1.00 a
bunch basil can't be beat, imho! Then there's Wolfs on 452 (south of
Baltimore Pike) although pricy and a tad overrated. For example, 2
avocados for $3.00, compared to Gentile's $0.79 cents each. Then there's
the new to me Linvilla Orchards just off 352 and Knowlton Rd., in Media.

Pennsylvania Dutch country is so much more than a buggy ride. I could
happily waste so much more of your time just visiting EVERYTHING else
they have to offer!

Thailand to a company in Maryland.

I have been to Reading Terminal market several times and have LOVED it. I
really love where we live now but wow.....Philadelphia is a great town for
foodies.

Now if you would just export some REAL Italian restaurants down here I'd be
happy!

The jar I usually buy "Golden Chef - Product of Thailand" contains an
almost solid mass that you need to scrape/chip. My guess is they fill
the jars with warm sugar and it hardens.

I remembered the other Pho restaurant (and shopping plaza it is in). It
is Pho 75 and is at the other Vietnamese shopping center located at 11th
& Washington. There is also a large Vietnamese market there. If you are
hunting for stuff it is good to hit both of the markets (6th & 11th
streets) because they have the same "core" stuff but different
selections of other stuff.

Thanks for the info. They're both from the sap of the respective palms
and the term palm and coconut sugar are used interchangeably, as they're
both very unprocessed sugars. The coconut sugar will do fine for now.

One tip I read was to cut the plastic jar off, place the crystallized
block in a bag and hammer it into more manageable granules.
