Default TVP?

Does anyone have any recipes using TVP?
Something nice and spicy.. kinda filling and full of veggies perhaps?
I've never (knowingly) eaten it but have always wanted to try some. I
stumbled on a small bag today and bought it. I have high hopes!

I use it in place of ground beef in tacos, shepherds pie and in place of
chicken in chicken and dumplings. no specific recipes, sorry, I just use it as
a substitute for meat.

Gads.....are they still making it?

Remember it from the mid 70s...... college days.....those enforced
vegetarian days when we could not afford meat more than three time a
week!

Have you check the sanitarium site? (they used to market it here in Oz)

http://www.sanitarium.com.au/recipe/....do?cat-id=215

might be something useful here.

cheers

Your hopes would be dashed in my house. Textured Vegetable Protein? OMG...
eat some paste from a tube (like they do on space flights) and report back
in the morning. YUK!

Well.. I wanted to try to make my own "veggie burgers" and figured that
might be a good start. So you've tried TVP?

I rehydrate it and use it in veggie chili sometimes. Half and half with
bulghur gives a nice texture.

I've looked at it Just the thought of it makes me cringe. But then
again, so do 'Boca Burgers' (and yes, I've tried all the substitutes). I'm
an omnivore all the way, no bones about it unless those bones are on some
smoked dry ribs!

I've never made burgers with it, but I suspect getting them to bind and stay
together would be quite a challenge. If you DO find a way, let me know, I'd
liek to try.

If you're an omnivore, you wouldn't have a prob with Boca burgers.
You'll eat anything if you're an omnivore. Which is probably what you
do anyway, you were just trying to state that you like meat and only
meat as your protein source :-)

TammyM, I like Boca Burgers, I like tofu, I like TVP, and I just et a
beautiful steak. Medium rare. Side of steamed cauliflower with a
light drizzle of olive oil and a smidge of shredded sharp cheddar.

Chicken precursors a.k.a. eggs ought to hold most anything together
pretty well

Short of that you probably need some vegetable starch to goop things up
adequately.

when I use tvp to make shepherd's pie I add eggs and, at least in my
experience, I've found that the egg holds but not too tightly and any more egg
would make it 'eggy'.

but, i've not really experimented with tvp burgers.
