Needed: simple apple crisp recipe!

I love Apple Crisp, but never have tried to make it. Can someone
supply me with a simple recipe that does not require a lot of stuff,
especially items not carried in most stores.

I know what you are thinking: has this guy ever made anything?? :)
Well, yes, but most of my life, when I wanted something, I just went
to a restaurant, bakery, or whatever and bought it. Now I enjoy
cooking more, except when I am lazy, which is most of the time.

Thanks,
Caesar

I just mix approx 3/4 c butter, 3/4 c brown sugar, 1/2t salt, a couple
table spoons of flour, 2 C. oats and spices (cinnamon, nutmeg and a
tiny bit of allspice, to taste) in a bowl, then slice my apples into a
glass buttered dish. Top with the oat mixture, press it down and bake
at 350F, approx 45 minutes, until apples are soft and slightly
bubbling, and topping has formed a crust. (Amounts are approximate as I
don't use a recipe.)

This is my favorite...have used it with other fruits, too.

4 cups peeled and sliced apples
1/4 cup hot water
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar

Arrange apples in a buttered baking dish.

Pour water over apples.

Add cinnamon to apples, if desired.

Cream the butter, add flour and sugar and blend to form crumbs

Sprinkle over apples.

Bake at 400° 40 to 45 minutes

Jillie, this is the recipe you gave me a few years ago and I have used
it ever since with great success. I have to confess that I add
raisins and a sprinkling of cinnamon to the apples and that I
substitute orange juice for the water, but you may remember that you
were the one who said that I should experiment with the recipe.

At this time of year, I use peaches and less water, as the fruit is
very juicy. Every time I make a crisp, I think of you with
Gratitude and Love.

Peaches!! Thanks, Margaret! If I make peach crisp that means I won't
have to make any more peach jam, peach honey, or anything else to jar
and process. I love peaches! And I'll tell you after I do it what else
I do to it. Thanks, Jillie.

I think this is the best one I've ever had.
Kate

APPLE CRISP

4 c. peeled, cored, sliced baking apples (about 6 medium)
2/3-3/4 c. packed brown sugar
1/2 c. rolled oats
3/4 t. cinnamon
3/4t. nutmeg
1/3 c. soft butter

Heat oven to 375F. Place sliced apples in greased pan (8x8x2" square
pan or 10x6x1 1/2" or 1 1/2 qt. baking dish). Blend remaining
ingredients until mixture is crumbly. Spread over apples. Bake 30-35
minutes or until apples are tender and topping is golden brown. Serve
warm with cream, ice cream, or Hard Sauce. Serves 6. (From Betty
Crocker's New Picture Cookbook, First Edition, 1961.) Notes: I find
any apples work. I particularly like McIntosh because that's my
favorite apple. Also you can do this with pears or a mixture of apples
and pears, which is excellent. I would use the same recipe for peach
crisp or just about any fruit crisp you want to try. I always eat it
with cream or ice cream, but it's really good plain, too.

Once I've tried something once, I tend to do it on the fly, myself.
I'm on a medication that robs me of much of my memory, though, so I've
been measuring and writing things down in MasterCook. Some things, I
can still cook on the fly. But not reliably. :o(

I'll keep your non-recipe in MasterCook so I can refer to it between
batches. If it's more than a few weeks, I'll need it. :D

If you have lots of fruit and want to use it all up, I even freeze it
and it crisps again when I thaw it and stick it into the oven (NOT the
microwave) to heat it. It is especially good with Vanilla Ice Cream
or real Schlag.

This is my mom's and it's really good:

Apple Crisp

Peel, core and slice 1 1/2 qt. apples, preferably a baking type like
Jonathons or Granny Smith. Place in a buttered 8" or 9" square pan and
sprinkle with 1/2 to 1 C. sugar, depending on sweetness of apples.

Mix: 1 C. flour 1/2 C. brown sugar
1/2 C. soft/melted butter Dash of salt
1/2 C. white sugar 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 C. oatmeal Dash of nutmeg

Spread evenly over the top of the apples and press down slightly with
your hand or back of a spoon. Bake at 350 deg. F. for 30 minutes.
Cool slightly on rack; serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.

Apple Crisp

1/2 C. all purpose flour
1 C. brown sugar, packed
1/4 C. shortning
1/4 C. butter or margarine
4 cups peeled, sliced tart apples

Combine flour and brown sugar, then cut in butter and shortening
to make a crumbly mixture. Arrange sliced apples in bottom of greased
shallow baking dish10 x 6.5 x 2 inches, sprinkle sugar mixture over
top and bake in a moderate oven (375° F.) 30 minutes or until top is
golden brown and crunchy and apples are tender. Let cool before
serving.

You could probably add cinnamon to this, but I like it just the way it
is...

Kate, I also use the Betty Crocker recipe, did you forget the flour?

I always use the lesser amount of sugar, and I sometimes add 1/4 C
wheat germ & a pinch of cardamom.

Hmmm? I'll have to look when I get home tonight.
I don't think I left anything out, but it's been a
while since I made it and can't remember if there's
flour or not. There may be different versions depending
on what edition you use. I've seen many different
editions other than the one I have and there are
differences in recipes included and in the recipes
themselves.

Well, I decided to call my aunt and ask her. She has the
same cookbook. You're right, it does have flour. I have
posted a corrected recipe.

You're welcome. If you'd made it without the flour and
it was horrible then my reputation would be ruined. :-)

I like cranberries, so often I'll make this recipe using the full
amount of sugar and adding 1 - 1 1/2 Cups cranberries to the apples.
