I notice that there's a dispute going on about this on Wikipedia,
between those who accept a single inventor in Saratoga c 1853, and others who assume a gradual evolution. Does anyone have any info? I'm just curious. (Though generally I tend to be a mite suspicious of single inventors) Lazarus |

In this case, the single inventor is fairly well documented, despite the urban mythic quality of the story: famous customer, sudden rush, improvisation. The gradual evolutionists aren't wrong, and it is likely that others made very thin potato fries previously now and then, but there is a pretty clear line of popularization back to Speck.
