You know, just as a side comment, I have to say I appreciate the
subtle literary allusions in your commentary... Romans, wolves, and a
food word containing the root for 'mammary' ... and of course we're
talking about 'origins.'

Was that on purpose, or did it slip out of your unconscious?

Freudian mispledding....

I've always been interested in the tales of the legionaires, certainly in
many cases the hard toughened professional long service soldiers of the
their day, voicing complaints and near mutiny when fed too much fresh meat
instead of their preferred ration of the Roamn GI version of "polenta". My
God, had they been issued baguettes, they would have killed their officers.
Apparently, the "ration" wine was hardly of vintage quality either, but the
troops preferred it and turned up their noses at the thin and bodyless
wines some later notable wine regions.
