Victory's Hop Wallop finally showed up here and after hearing all the
kudos it's gotten, I was eager to try some. Great beer, great balance
of malt/hops, nicely bittered..but where's the wallop? I don't _think_
it's just a case of PNW hop burnout. I expected to be assaulted by hops
and I had to really work to find much more than a nicely balanced
bitterness in the beer. Followed that up with a Terminal Gravity IPA.
Now, THERE'S a hop wallop, but still with a strong malt backbone to it!
Anybody else been a little disappointed in Hop Wallop? Agaian, I'm not
saying it's in any manner a bad beer, but I wanna get walloped!

Please indicate the Wallop Level (4 being the highest) desired:

1. Mom just caught you enjoying Dad's Playboy collection
2. Dad just caught you enjoying Mom's Playgirl collection
3. Mom and Dad just realized those weren't sage plants growing in your room.
4. A carboy in the hands of Denny ;-)

Probabaly just below 1!

I realize that my post may look like a troll, but I'd really like to
hear opinions about this beer, if anyob=ne has one. Am I totally wrong
and missing the beauty of this beer?

Maybe yours lost something in transit? I have some at home and it's
mighty hoppy all right, but is too unbalanced for my palate. I prefer
either Hop Devil or Old Horizontal, which have enough malt to push back
against the hops...

Maybe so..if it was unbalanced, it was toward the malt side, not the
hops. But overall, I'd have to say it was superbly balanced...it's just
that I don't expect balance in a beer aleed "Hop Wallop"! OTOH, there's
no reason they have to brew to my expectations... Thanks, Bill.

I wasn't even vaguely impressed by Hop Wallop. Thought it was
uninteresting and a bit harsh, malt and hops didn't blend well at all. I
wanted to be impressed as I'm a big Victory fan, but it's not a beer I ever
need to visit again.

Jeez, I tried it and found it basically undrinkably hoppy. It was
painful. I don't think I finished the pint.

I much prefer the Hop Devil.

mmmm Hops. I enjoyed the Victory's Hop Wallop even though it was not quite
as hoppy a I had expected.

I am still searching for a beer that I consider too hoppy. Any suggestions
out there? The Wyerbacher Hops Infusion is the closest that I have come,
the highest IBU that is, while maintaining a balance.

The hoppiest beer I've had thus far is Dogsbody Ale. (I had it at the
Winking Judge in Hamilton, Ontario.) There's a link for it in the 3rd
paragraph at the site given below. It is described there as "a
refreshing hop field in a glass".

I've not had any of the other brews mentioned in this thread, so can't
say how they compare. I can say, however, that Dogsbody was a bit too
hoppy for me.

To me it wasn't the hops (I've enjoyed much hoppier beers), just that
Hop Wallop didn't have an adequate malt profile to back it up. Beers
like Ruination, Hop Rod Rye, or Dreadnaught all seemed hoppier than Hop
Wallop, but they had a malt backbone. --

As that beer is quite likely under 40 IBU, you'll definitely want to stay
FAR away from IPAs from Stone, Bear Republic, Pizza Port, Oggi's, Three
Floyds, LaConner, Diamond Knot, etc., etc., etc.
