I picked up my entries from the fair today. Here a couple of pictures
of the ribbons.

The Best of the Soft Spreads. http://tinypic.com/view/?pic=44gmvdt

The tomato juice and the sliced peaches were not opened at all. The
seal had at least been broken on everything else.

I did get a book for this year's fair and will be on the mailing list
for next year. I think I will download some of the scoring
information from the state fair to use in deciding which item to enter
or whether to skip the category.

Now back to work juicing the rest of the muscadines.

I think that is what happened. I believe that they do the judging in
stages. If the jar looks up to standards they will open it. If it
looks and smells ok, they will taste.

Pete was taking pictures. I told him later that he should have taken
pictures of the winners in the categories I entered but did not win
anything. I forgot to ask what happened to the jar of jelly that was
listed as using the inversion method instead of BWB.

Susan, they look wonderful (did ya send Barb some of those prize winning
beets?). What fair did you enter? I thought most were over by now. I know
in PA (where I now live) they have the Farm Show in Harrisburg in January,
which is basically the state fair, but I don't know squat about entering
anything in it. I remember being a kid in NC that the state fair was in
October after all the county fairs closed so the winners could advance.

The message was posted in early October. State fair is in the middle
of October and there is no longer any advancing from county to state.
I entered the Dixie Classic Fair in Winston Salem. It is somewhere
between the little county fairs and the State Fair and is open to
anyone in the state but seems to draw mostly from Forsyth and
surrounding counties. You don't want to enter a fair that is too far
away since it takes 3 trips -- take entries, go back to see how you
did, and then pick up jars and any ribbons.

Last year I entered the county (Surry) fair and did OK but there was
no county fair here this year.
