Default We shoulda started earlier!

As I start to type this, the clock on my computer reads 12:30 AM
(Sept. 2/11).
We just finished removing the last of the jars from the BWB canner, a
total of 26 pints of chili sauce and 6 quarts of tomato juice.
It all started yesterday with going to our garden to harvest tomatoes,
peppers and onions (had to buy the celery (never had any luck growing
that).
Blanch and skin tomatoes, chop everything else, measure, boil, bottle,
then process 7 pints or 6 quart jars per batch.
Tired, going to bed now. Hope the offspring appreciate this stuff.

Ross.

If they don't don't make them any more of it. <G> That's how I punish mine.

we picked 5 buckets of tomatoes Monday.
put up 24 quarts of tomato juice that evening,
ran out of jars. got more jars Tuesday,
finished up the last bucket of tomatoes that
night.

today, picked four more buckets of tomatoes
and half a bucket of concord grapes. have
to pick peaches tomorrow...

i wasn't even planning on doing grape
jam this year! oops.

first up tonight the grapes.

5 buckets? Wow. Our week-long Oregon summer wasn't quite enough to
ripen our tomatoes. Luckily, my favorite farm-direct market is
offering a steal on canning tomatoes and peaches over Labor Day
weekend. If they still have them by the time I can get there
tomorrow, Sunday will NOT be a day of rest for me!

me either. those peaches are waiting. i
hope i can get them picked sunday.

we just finished up another 28qts of
tomato juice. using very basic methods
it is a lot of work. more than i would
do as i think there are easier ways of
doing all of this.

we planted 24 beefsteak plants and
all of them survived. the weather has
been mostly hot and sunny with rains
once in a while the past month. for
the first few months of summer we had
perhaps 1.5 inches of rain and then it
picked up again and we've had mostly
regular showers since.

the two additional cherry tomato plants
have been putting out many pounds of fruit
too. we give those away to friends and
some of the beefsteaks too, but as of now
we are over 103qts of juice and tomatoes
so now i'd like to give all the rest away,
but Ma volunteered to do two more cases
for my sister in law. guess who will be
helping?

the buckets i'm talking about are the
4.5 gallon buckets and when i weigh them
they come in over 22lbs each.

working backwards from 103 qts at about
7qts per bucket that's 15 buckets so far
and that doesn't count how many we've eaten
or given away.

good luck on finding some good tomatoes
at the market.
