Get an old pair of stockings from your wife or a lady friend. Put an onion
in and push to the toe. Tie a knot above the onion and insert a second onion etc. When the stocking is full, hang in a dry place. Cut off onions as you use them. they will last a long time this way. Be sure to drain them well before putting into the fridge. Last year I carefully rinsed a fresh onion and several days later I realized the water had run down inside the leaves and it was rotting from the inside. ;< My Dad planted several 'sprouting' onions this spring. After a few weeks he pulled some. They are giant, sweet, 'green' onions. Deb -- If I ran the world, we'd all face different challenges. ;> |

First you have to cure them and second, you have to make sure you planted a
storing onion. Some will store almost 30 days and some will store over the winter. Most "sweet" onions wont store for very long. The hot ones will normally store longer. To cure them, lay them out somewhere that they will not be in the sun, the air can circulate around them (not stacked up), and 80 degrees F. Leave them for 10 to 12 days before storing. I lay my spring crop on paper on the garage floor, the fall crop goes in the basement on a shelf constructed by building a frame and using door screen for the bottom. I made it big enough for my onions and sweet potatoes.
