Granny's Yellow Cake

3/4 tsp. baking soda
3/4 cup buttermilk
1/3 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
3 eggs
2 Tbsp. cornstarch
2 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
Pinch of salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Combine baking soda with buttermilk and set aside. In a large mixing bowl
cream butter, shortening and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well
after each addition. Add cornstarch, beat well. Sift together flour,
baking powder and salt. Add alternately with buttermilk to creamed
mixture; add vanilla. Pour into 2 greased and floured 9 inch round pans.
Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Frost with Butter Cream Frosting.
