Haliskas (Cabbage and Noodles)
prep time 20-30 minutes bake time 60 minutes serves 12-14 1/4 lb butter 1 medium head cabbage, coarse chopped 2 medium brown onions, coarse chopped 1 Tbsp salt 1 Tbsp pepper (or more to taste) 1 lb egg noodles, PRE COOKED Preheat oven to 350F Melt butter over medium heat in large soup pot. Add all ingredients except noodles. Stir mixture to coat in butter. Cover pot and cook until cabbage is limp and onions become translucent (about 10 minutes), stirring occasionally. Add mixture to noodles and mix in large casserole dish. Cover casserole dish and bake for fifty minutes. Remove cover and bake until edges of noodles brown. Allow 10-15 minutes for cool down. This dish is a family favorite for potlucks. The look is somewhat grey but once people taste it, they love it. I've never had any leftovers after taking this dish to gatherings. Whenever I make it at home, the leftovers are almost better the next day. It reheats well and even tastes good cold. -- Rec.food.recipes is moderated by Patricia D. Hill at .
