Hoe Cakes

: My father used to make this for my sister and I when I was very young.
It was from a recipe given to him by an old southern gentleman. It was
cooked over the stove slowly in a cast iron skillet and was similiar in
taste to a biscuit and used may of the same ingredients, including lard.
My father has forgotten the recipe.. The attempts that I tried have
failed. I am going to visit dear old dad in Oct and would love to make him
that delicious cake for breakfast. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?
and better yet, have the recipe?
HOE CAKES

1 1/2 cup corn meal
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup Crisco oil
1 1/4 cup buttermilk
1/3 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. soda

Combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, salt and soda in medium bowl. Add eggs,
oil and buttermilk. Stir just until ingredients are moistened. Pour into
heavily oiled skillet 1/4 cup of batter for each hoe cake. Fry over
medium-high heat 1 or 2 minutes or until golden brown on each side. Use
additional oil if necessary. Drain on paper towels. Serve immediately.
"...Then Abraham ran back to the tend and said to Sarah, 'Quick! Mix up
some hoe cakes! Use your best meal and flour, and make enough for the
three of them!'" Genesis 18:6
