Your biscuits don't have any leavening; perhaps that is the problem.
This is the recipe I learned from my mother, and I have always had good
luck with it.
Baking Powder Biscuits
Sift together:
2 cup flour
2 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
Cut in finely:
1/4 cup shortening (we use Crisco now, but we used to use lard. Both
work well.)
Stir in:
3/4 cup milk
Knead the dough lightly. Roll or pat out about 1/2 an inch thick.
Cut. Place on ungreased baking sheet. (My mom and I pour a small
puddle of vegetable oil on the sheet, lay each biscuit in the oil and
then flip it to lightly coat both sides. Then we place them on the
baking sheet so that they just touch.) Bake until golden brown at
450 . (about 10-12 minutes.)
Good luck!
