This is a variation of Lisa W. Corbett's
Blue Ribbon & Grand Champion Recipe 2000 Fla. Strawberry Festival Competition Chow Chow ( for the fridge) 2 Quarts cabbage, chopped 2 cups sweet red peppers, seeded and chopped 1 cup onion, chopped 1/4 cup pickling salt 2 cups white vinegar 2 1/4 cups sugar 1/2 teaspoon celery seed 1/2 teaspoon mustard seed 1/2 teaspoon turmeric 1 1/2 teaspoons pickling spices 1 1/2 teaspoons prepared mustard 4 hot peppers, seeded and chopped Mix together cabbage, peppers, onions and salt. Let stand for 1 hour and drain. Mix vinegar, sugar, spices, hot peppers and drained vegetables. Bring to a boil and boil for 5 minutes. Turn down heat and simmer for 5 more minutes. Ladle into glass jars and cover with lids, or cool a while and place into plastic containers. Allow the jars to cool down enough to place in the fridge.
