My fear is that USENET will cease to be supported at all. I'm
wondering if the moderators of this group would make it a private,
noderated group on Google Groups to preserve it. That would also
provide a way to weed out the spammers.

If Google groups takes it over, I, for one, am gone.

aioe.org, and other free servers. And in the very end,
private, home based non-binary newsservers would work.
Google is eViL.
Sourdough in not.

There are no moderators. This is not a moderated group. There is no one
to take it over, allow posts, disallow posts or close down this
newsgroup. AFAIK, the only thing that will kill this group is if people
stop posting here. Yes, more and more ISPs are discontinuing all
newsgroups, but there are still many ways to access them, both paid and
free. I cited a free one above.

A moderated group could be created, and if people used it, it would be
successful. If not, well, how long would you wait for a posting before
giving up on it?

I think this group will survive as long as enough of us are interested
in it...

I to lost usenet service with AT&T but I found this new server
http://www.eternal-september.org/ went to thier web page and sing up. They
sent me a password and all the information I needed. I to dislike Google to
me it is hard to read a newsgrop in Google.

Glad to be back on rec.food.sourdough
