Default New Jersey Sushi ?

Seriously, are there any Sushi restaurants in New Jersey NOT owned by
Chinese ?

I move recently had to move to the Jersey due to work, I'm in South
Orange.

I've tried to find a decent Sushi restaurant around here but have
given up, hence my post.

Here's what I have found so far,

Livingston - Samurai sushi, walked in, looks like a Chinese owned
chain place.

Maplewood - Samurai sushi, looks like another branch, Chinese.

Milburn - Samurai sushi, if I see another Samurai sushi there will be
trouble, Chinese.

South Orange - 2 places, nearer the station was the worst sushi I've
ever eaten in my life, it was disgusting. Never ever will enter that
place again, Chinese.

South Orange - top of the hill, Korean ? horrendously over priced and
nearly as bad as the other place.

Livingston - Zen, went there and actually ate there, huge pieces made
by chinese people on a puck of rice, no clue what nigiri should be.
The place was PACKED. I ordered Uni, Ikura, Hamachi, Sake, Octopus and
Mackerel. Massive pieces hanging over the oval puck of rice, not bad
quality fish but somehow just not right... Sat at the sushi bar and
overheard the converstation between the chinese sushi chef and a
chinese friend at the bar next to me. The guy tells me how Zen is the
best in the area and his friend has just came from Hoboken especially
for the sushi here. I'm gonna love the "huge pieces" etc etc. I ended
up telling him that the guys behind the counter are chinese and have
no clue how to make Nigiri.

Did I miss Floral Park, another Chinese place which I went to for
lunch, never again.

I have nothing against Chinese people, I lived in Hong kong for years,
loved it, love the people speak a little of the language etc etc. But
what the hell is with them ripping off Sushi restaurants all over the
place and serving sub standard food ?

They think the gweilo doesn't recognise the difference between a
nihonjin and a chugokujin (how do you spell that ? :-)

Can you guys recommend me a place in Jersey, maybe somewhere
reasonably close to South Orange ? If not no problem.

I will just continue to travel to my fave place in Sunnyside Queens.

Thanks

D

Genki,

I moved from North Jersey quite some time ago, but you might give
Sukeroku in Little Falls a shot. I used to work there in the early 90s
and believe they are under new ownership now if they're even still
around. Even so, due to Ricoh, JVC, etc. nearby, they might still be
Japanese-run and worth a drive up Route 23.

Otherwise, do what I do and make the trip into the city. My current
favorite is Ushiwakamaru on Houston between MacDougal and Sullivan
Streets. The set price omakase is worth the trip.

Sukeroku is now Chinese owned. It is however, better than the norm as far
as non-Japanese sushi restaurants go. The chefs may still be Japanese.

I may venture a guess that it's flooded from the weekend's rains.

Hey Bechi,

Thanks, I just moved from the city out here. Haven't tried
Ushiwakamaru, will check it out.

I'm looking forward to an excuse to go to Yasuda.

Ft Lee must still have some good sushi joints. It's closer than
Queens anyway. But the best idea for you is not to ask here but
rather search around Roadfood and Chowhound and EGullet, some big
league food discussion forums!

Fort Lee used to be predominantly Japanese in the 1960s and 1970s.
During the 1980s the Japanese population dissappeared (I think scattered
further north) and Fort Lee became mostly Korean. For the last 10 years you
see nothing but store signs in Hangul (Korean language) when you drive
through.
Noshiro was the popular sushi place and the last time I was there I believe
the Japanese itamae
told me that the place had been bought by Koreans. The teppanyaki place Kiku
was
also sold to Korean owners way back.
Westchester in New York on the other hand still has several good Japanese
sushi restaurants,
and in fact a couple of reasonably good Korean BBQ places.
