Sushi (alt.food.sushi) For talking sushi. (Sashimi, wasabi, miso soup, and other elements of the sushi experience are valid topics.) Sushi is a broad topic; discussions range from preparation to methods of eating to favorite kinds to good restaurants.

Default San Fran Sushi

Going to San Fran and wondering where the good sushi is downtown. Won't
have a car so someplace cab-able would be nice. Staying near the
Embarcadero.

thanks

My favorite place closed years ago.. I had another great dinner at
Sakana on Post St. A little bit of a walk from Market St., but doable.

Hi,

San Francisco sushi was a nice surprise for us...

In the Memphis, Tennessee area we have pretty fair sushi for someplace
hundreds of miles from the closest ocean or sea...

we're the FedEx hub ... so the fish is here pretty quick and the few
quality sushi bars do fedex fish.

but... this affects more than the price of a pair of nigiri

it affects the amount of fish you get too...

in SF I consistently get double the fish I see in middle america for the
same price... and SF isn't noted for being a cheap city (though it can
really be a bargain when compared to destinations where you HAVE to rent
a car).

I've said this here before, but I'll repeat it. More fish isn't
necessarily better. There's a optimum amount of fish to be on nigiri.
If you want more fish and less rice, order sashimi instead of sushi.

There are three problems with two much fish on nigiri:

1. It destroys the balance between fish and rice. It's that balance
that makes sushi sushi.

2. It's very hard to eat. It gets too big to fit into your mouth at
once and it tends to fall apart if you take bites of it.

3. it fills me up too fast. The result is that I get to eat fewer
kinds of sushi, and the variety of different fish is what I most like
about sushi.

Right on, more or less! The only thing is it seems to be the
rice that fills you up!

We ended up going to a place called Tsunami, 1306 Fulton St.

Very nice sushi. Prepared flawlessly. Best prepared crab sunomono we've
ever had. Looked like art. Fish was super fresh.

Would you return to a place where the fish was noticeably
lacking in super freshness? That is any hint of a "fishy" taste.

I have returned to places where the fish wasn't super fresh.
Super market sushi is one of them.. the fish isn't super fresh,
but its not rotting. Obviously its not great stuff, but I'll eat
it from time to time.

Yes, I have picked up sushi from Fresh Fields and places like
that but it's rather a desperation measure even it is not bad.
Rather poor texture rather than a fishy taste is sometimes my
criticism. I was not thinking of them as a restaurant to return
to.

Well in some cases I've had to return to restaurants like this.
We only have one sushi place in out town, and its not that great.
If I plan things, I'll go to the good ones in other towns.. but
often I'm pressed for time and have ended up at their counter to
sup on less then great sushi.

Also many people live outside of the bigger coastal cities where it's
possible to get excellent sushi. If they want sushi at all, they have
to settle for what's available.
