Sushi (alt.food.sushi) For talking sushi. (Sashimi, wasabi, miso soup, and other elements of the sushi experience are valid topics.) Sushi is a broad topic; discussions range from preparation to methods of eating to favorite kinds to good restaurants.

Default [ANN] Sushi-bar guide for the Netherlands

Hi,

If you can read Dutch and happen to visit or live in the Netherlands
(Amsterdam), take a look at Zin In Sushi, The sushi-bar guide for the
Netherlands; http://www.zininsushi.nl

Regards,

Ward

I loved the raw green herring that they sold on the street in
Amsterdam. Where can I get that in the US?

I've never seen it in the US either. I understand that by law it's
deep frozen before sold nowadays, so - even if that fish is not
available here (?) - why isn't it imported frozen?

I think I've mentioned this before but sometime in May-June
the Oyster Bar at Grand Central in New York City carries
the raw green herring. It shows up on their daily menu on their website.
I always take advantage of this every year, even taking some home for
dinner.
Over the years the price has gone up a bit, and last year I think it was
$6.00 each.
With the cost of fuel/transportation going up it'll probably be higher this
year
as it's flown in from Amsterdam.
The Oyster Bar does have a mail order section but I'm not sure if they will
ship
everything they carry or only selected items.

To Our Loyal Customers,

Thank you for the years of loyal support of our Smoked Fish,
Cheesecake, and other Grand Central Oyster Bar Specialties.

Due to a terrible accident at our restaurant inside Grand Central on
October 23rd, our Mail Order Program will be limited to Clothing and
Books this Year. We are working diligently to make the necessary
repairs to our facility and plan to be back in full production in
early 2008.

They still have this notice in their mail order page, so I guess it's
not functional yet.

China is much farther away than Amsterdam, and they bring in ten
million pounds of inexpensive frozen Chinese fish every year...
