Sushi (alt.food.sushi) For talking sushi. (Sashimi, wasabi, miso soup, and other elements of the sushi experience are valid topics.) Sushi is a broad topic; discussions range from preparation to methods of eating to favorite kinds to good restaurants. |

<delurking> Hello there...
Just a quick question if I may, would anyone be able to advise me with regards to sushi's calorie content? I absolutely adore sushi (and steamed rice with vegetables and soy sauce, for that matter) but I also tend to put on weight easily and have to watch what I eat. So, is sushi (and steamed rice) fattening? Thanking you in advance for your help :-) Trin from London |

For myself, I generally don't feel I have overeaten when I have had as much sushi as I like, or wish to afford :-) Jim. |

> Just a quick question if I may, would anyone be able to advise > me with regards to sushi's calorie content? This sort of question is frequently asked in a.f.s but it is not yet in the unofficial FAQ (www.sushifaq.com). Googling a.f.s for "calories" or "nutritional content" will bring up lots of old posts with relevant info and links. The only one that comes to mind is www.afcsushi.com but their nutritional info is gone (but returning soon?). This is still in the google cache, but you have to access it through www.google.com, search "sushi nutrition": http://www.afcsushi.com/pages/nutrition.html These days, there is more to know than just calories. Per cent of calories from fat, cholesterol, sodium, protein and fiber are currently in vogue and found on most food labels. Note that shellfish are generally high in cholesterol. Here's one sample entry from afcsushi: SUSHI (A-L) California Roll Serving Size 12 pieces Calories 290 Calories from Fat 45 Total Fat 5 g, % DV 8 Saturated Fat 1 g % DV 4 Cholesterol < 5mg % DV 2 Sodium 380 mg, % DV 16 Total Carbos 54 g % DV 18 Dietary Fiber 3 g % DV 11 Protein 7 g -- Sent by xanadoof from yahoo in field com This is a spam protected message. Not everyone is concerned with cutting carbs out completely, but knowing the nutritional amounts for sushi may help them figure out how much they can eat within a certain diet. Weight Watchers has a points system that allows certain amounts of things.. and I think they have info on sushi, but I was unable to find anything on their site since I'm not a member. >>Note that shellfish are generally high in cholesterol. >> > > Cholesterol in food, which goes through your alimentary system, is not > a huge concern, most of it is digested. Just a quick line to say an immense 'THANK YOU' to all who took time to
reply to my query. Your answers were most useful and informative! Admittedly, as a pesco-vegetarian and not at all convinced by the Atkins craze that is sweeping the globe, my diet is quite rich in carbs although I tend to stay away from bread and keep pasta and noodles under control. But I do love my rice! I will keep the comments received in mind. Thanks again, Trin |

Or maybe that it did not raise your bad levels in your blood. -- Dan |
