Sushi (alt.food.sushi) For talking sushi. (Sashimi, wasabi, miso soup, and other elements of the sushi experience are valid topics.) Sushi is a broad topic; discussions range from preparation to methods of eating to favorite kinds to good restaurants. |

New owners, all new personnel.
Ordered chirashi today, and saw the (new) chef slicing up CUCUMBER - the stuff that the worst of the sushi dives use as filler instead of fish - and I thought that's it for S10 - but there was a lot of good fresh fish, too, and some new stuff, too - one item I couldn't ID, so I asked. It was little scallops with tiny roe on it. They are friendly! Because I asked, the chef gave me a big bowl of 'em! I also asked if they're gonna have fresh wasabi. Nope. Very few places have that, he said, and he deemed it way too much trouble to grate, and hard to get and expensive, too. Also, they added a bigger glop of uni than the old S10 chef did, so... |

Something to be aware of is that the "17th street market" off Park Avenue
has finally started carrying Sushi grade fresh fish at their fish counter. They also have frozen squid, eel, other special items brought in from Asia in the frozen counter. I had some really good Tuna last night and will enjoy some Yellow Tail today :-D My Sushi doesn't look so good yet but, it sure does taste good. Not bad for ~$13 to $15 a pound for the fish. It's almost worth a drive into town just for that fish. |

I'm happy for you. It sounds like you've got a good place to still go
to. Maybe better! ________________________ Oh, I don't know. i don't think they'll always be giving me a lot of free stuff, but I bet that CUCUMBER is part of their permanent chirashi master recipe now. There oughta be a sign posted outside good sushi joints with a circle and a picture of a cucumber inside it and a red line drawn through it! Cucumber is OK in its way, but if I want to eat a cucumber I'll go in a supermarket and buy one for a quarter - and I prefer my cucumbers NOT to be cut up in fancy curley-q's, so they take up even more space. (PS Persian cucumbers are excellent!) What if I just say, "No cucumber, please."? |

Oh, good. I haven't been there in quite a while. It's an interesting
place. Best fish store that I know of in Tucson - though a far cry from Lee Lee's and 99 Ranch Market up north. |

When I talked the staff at the 17th street market, they indicated they were
in the process of really upgrading their fish selections with a specific emphasis on Sushi. They were not specific as to when the complete transformation of their offering would be complete but, I think it is certainly well worth a phone call if you are driving into to town. I tried Rincon Market once but, I must have caught it on an off day because it seem pretty average. Of course, I tend to go to Roma Imports and the 17th Street Market first when I go to town. What are "Lee Lee's and 99 Ranch Market"? How far "up north" are they? Are they in Phoenix? "Ken Blake" > wrote in message ... > wrote: > >> Oh, good. I haven't been there in quite a while. Yeah, up in the Phoenix megalopolis - both enormous Asian markets, especially Lee Lee's, which is in Chandler on Warner and Dobson, and 99 is in the Chinese Cultural Center, Phoenix, just south of Rt 202 on 44 Av. I'm surprised you guys don't know about them. Worth a trip up to stock up on Asian stuff. |

I heard some good things but, I didn't understand it myself. There is a good place to get rice just north of the Main Gate and Davis Monthan. I think it's called Sun Oriental Market. It is like the 17th Street market Asian aisles, only smaller. I stop by there for rice because they have such a good selection of 3 to 10 pound sacks of rice. A 25 to 50 pound sack is just too much for one person ;-) |

Here's the latest poop on the once-great S10 in Tucson. It's been
bought up by the same guy who owns Sushi Hama on Oracle Rd., not Japanese. It was sold in December. New and different chefs there again today - friendly but inept. I said "no cucumber" so i got a lot of shredded daikon instead. I guess if they're gonna cut corners they're gonna cut corners. The two former owners (also the chefs) are trying to acquire their own restaurants, one in Tucson, one in Tempe. |

Sushi Hama? Isn't that the all-you-can-eat place where they throw the
oshibori to the customers? --- Don't know. Have no desire to know either judging by what they've done to my old favorite here. Phooey. I've eaten there a couple of times. It wasn't great, but not bad. Is Sushi Ten now doing AYCE too? ---They might as well... --- Speaking of AYCE joints - I'd never go to one that cut corners by putting little fish and lots of rice and demanding that you consume all the rice. -- ww |
