Default newbie question

greetings, i have been recently suffering from severe sinusitis with
accompanying headaches that wake me up almost everynight. the doctor has
giving me all kinds of prescriptions but i dont like taking all those
pills/sprays (although i do ) i have noticed that drinking a cup of
chamomile and peppermint tea (sleepy time brand ) gives me somewhat
speedy relief in breaking up the congestion and thus relieving the
blinding headache pain. my question is can anyone suggest a tea
blend/brand that works well with alleviating my congestion. i just want
to try different types of tea to see if anything works as well or better.
many thanks, cj

Well, first- congratulations on finding something that works! But just so
you know- chamomile and peppermint are not actually 'teas'- they're herbals
beverages called teas, or tisanes.

I find that the best thing to do is to go to an herbalist, or if your town
doesn't have one, a good health food store that sells loose herbs. It's
actually cheaper to buy loose chamomile and peppermint than to buy it made
up ahead of time, although I am a big fan of Sleepytime tea. Any of the
mints would be good- pennyroyal is also relaxing and can help you sleep. I
would also suggest that you give up milk and other products made with milk.
Dairy products cause a buildup of mucus, which leads to congestion. If you
have to have calcium, take one of those at bedtime- calcium will actually
help you relax and help fend off osteoporosis.

I would just like to add the serious comment...please check with your doctor
before taking something that could potentially interact with your
medications. I've never heard anything bad about chamomile or mint (drink em
myself) but it's always best to make sure. Or you could even call your
pharmacist I think.

The people that believe in homeopathy also believe that mint prevents the
effect of their sugar-ball-medicines. I have friends that even order special
toothpastes as they also believe all the regular ones contain mint.

Kuri that believes in mint and avoids homeopathy

I have no suggestions, but thanks for yours. I'm off to try it. I'll go to
the herb shop and pick up the components -- camomile and mint -- and mix it
up myself. If it works, I'll be forever indebted to you.

Kuri,

With all due respect, no need to avoid homeopathy. You dilute the substance
to the point where not a single molecule remains in the water, but the water
"remembers." Nothing to fear. Literally.

Actually, I should have thrown that in- people with allergies to flowers,
for instance, should be careful when drinking herbal remedies.

Well homeopathy is different than herbal medicine. But some herbs can
definitely affect other medications. For instance, I've read that taking
ginko biloba on a regular basis improves blood flow, which is what it is
supposed to do (and is what allegedly causes it's thought boosting
abilities) but a stronger blood flow could cause serious problems if one is,
say, going in for surgery, or if one is also taking asprin which also thins
the blood...or...or.

Oh, and I also saw last week's episode of House (on that scurious network
Fox) which featured "mugwort tea" as a prominent character.

That's my point is all.

Melinda, NOT an herbalist, NOT a doctor, someone who tries to use
intelligence and common sense in her own best interest.

i tried another peppermint remedy last night... i put a couple of
tablespoons of dr. bronners peppermint soap (liquid )in a large bowl
with very hot water, draped a towel around my head and inhaled VERY
deeply for about 5 minutes . after a few minutes i could feel my
sinuses clearing and the headache going bye-bye...it really works well.
if you try this and have severe congestion i suggest you have some
tissue close by because the mucus will flow. dr. b's is available at
health food stores and online. i know this has nothing to do with tea
but i'd thought i post this anyway. also, dr. b's peppermint soap
absolutely kicks butt on a hot steamy day in the shower. cj
