Default Wretched green tea

From "The Broker" by John Grisham, © 2005 by Belfry Holdings, Inc.

It's dark out and Teddy Maynard, the director of the CIA, is on his way to
the White House...

p. 6: "As the van moved along the Beltway at a constant sixty miles an
hour, Teddy sipped green tea poured from a thermos by Hoby, and watched the
cars behind them."

At the White House, he continues to sip tea, then they leave...

p. 19: "Hoby poured another cup of green tea, decaffeinated now because it
was almost midnight, and handed it to Teddy, who was wrapped in a blanket
and staring at the traffic behind them."

Days later, Ms. Javier is summoned to Teddy's office for a briefing...

p. 91: "She entered his "station," as he preferred it to be called, and
once again found him parked at the end of a long wide conference table,
sitting high in his jacked-up wheelchair, bundled in blankets from the chest
down, wearing his standard black suit, peering over stacks of summaries,
with Hoby hovering nearby ready to fetch another cup of the wretched green
tea that Teddy was convinced was keeping him alive."

WRETCHED green tea?

Sheesh.

Maybe the tea paralyzed him before beginning to keep him alive? We
need more details.

LOL!

Not much mo

"He was barely alive, but then Julia Javier had been thinking that for years
now.

Since she didn't drink coffee and wouldn't touch the tea, nothing was
offered. She took her customary seat..."

That's it for tea so far. I'm on Ch. 18, p. 181 - about halfway through the
book which I'm enjoying a lot except for that wretched green tea.

Well, since we don't know what kind of green tea, it very well could be
wretched. I've certainly encountered more than a few in my short time as a
tea drinker. Or, maybe Hoby (or more likely John himself) doesn't know how
to brew green tea. We should send Mr. Grsham some of the good stuff with
proper brewing instructions and see what comes out in his next book.

Good point. I recall an ABC WNN newscaster trying green tea and a few nights
later he said, sorry, I give up, I just can't handle it.

How do we find Grisham's address? He has homes in MS and VA and splits his
time between them.

Very true. It wouldn't be as dramatic if he had to drink some glorious,
complex and delightful drink to survive his wreched condition.

The sad details continue to unfold...

p. 206: "Lucat scratched his beard and looked across the table at Julia,
who was biting a nail and looking over at Hoby, who was stirring green tea
with a plastic stick."

p. 207: "...Teddy said as his white wrinkled hands slowly lifted a paper
cup of green tea to his mouth. He slurped it loudly, crudely."

GAHHH! A paper cup?!?!?! The director of the CIA doesn't have a decent cup
or mug in his office???

Please don't tell me this is character development!
