The Leeds Groupers entered a unique craft in the 1976 Under The Channel race. Designed by the engineers at Morris Garages (makers of the MG) it was a convertible. And wouldn't you know it -- the Groupers' captain took the top down because it was a nice day. I was in the spectator diving bell and have photos of the final turn where the Easton Easterners cut across the bow of the judges' sub and were ruled out of the race. Maddy Maddleton, the Easton sponsor ("Maddy's Madhouse, home of the lumpy mattress") protested and was hit with a wet scone by the Links Linkers from Scotland. The fun was intense. When I wrote the last line for a news item I submitted, the copy editor changed it to "The fun was in tents," and I was sued for defamation, public indecency and failure to invite the judges. Leon |
