Joseph,
It all depends on what you would care for - my favorite place is the Vin sur
Vin in rue Biscarra, but, really, that is more of a lunch joint - good wines
though, they don't have a wine list, you just go into the cellar with M
Frank and take your pick.
If you want something a bit upmarket, I would, with a certain trepidation,
recommend L' Âne ROuge in the Old HArbour. HAs one thingy in Guide Michelin,
good lamb, good fish, not bad as wine lists go. LAst time we were there we
had a CdP from Chapoutier, but I don't recall which.
I would put up a warning for another place, L'Universe de Christian
Plumaille, which for some reason also has one thingy - we went there once
and were sorely disappointed. However, as the saying goes, beware the doctor
with one patient - others may have better experiences.

Just my EU 0.02, of course.

Cheers

Nils Gustaf

Ah, most excellent Signor Tommasi!
Yes we will be down Oct 27th as things appear now. Will stay for a good
week. No plans, as such, except to pop in to one of the olive oil producers
we met in Chateauneu-le-rouge this summer. Have you got any good and wicked
plans of which you would have us partake? Say on.

Cheers

Nils Gustaf

PS
Of course, L'Âne Rouge is a bit like BB King in an old silk suit playing and
moaning "The thrill is gone" - the craft is there, and a memory of the
passion, but, today it is a profession and keeps you in comfort ... still,
Vin sur Vin in the evening can be a bit deserted, have you noticed? I am not
aware of our esteemed friend Joseph Coulter's tastes, but, if I were
jet-lagged and a bit under the weather and wanted a good meal in comfort
(there it is again), I might just prefer the donkey to 20/vin - never for
lunch mind you!
As for Merenda - have you been there? WE have talked about it again and
again but never adventured - also, these days, we tend less and less to
visit the eateries what with finding good produce close to home ...

Too bloody true, mate, and no mistake.

Nils, spoken like a true-blue Australian !!!!

As to Mikes original sentiment, you will only get 100% agreement from His
Lordship.

Mike, do you realise that it is nearly 12 months since they agreed to let me
into Nice!!!

Mike, I daresay that the same could be said of almost any region. I know
that the best kitchen in my home town is about 35 feet from me right
now. Between my wife and I it is hard to justify a night out anywhere in
the area.

That said I appreciate the recommendation for Nice. Since we have lunch
and dinner to take care of we might become quite decadnet in our 30 hour
layover. :-)

'Time flies like an arrow - fruit flies like a banana'
Parse and translate into Japanese in the form of a haiku.

If you have both lunch and dinner, then no worries: take lunch at Vin sur
Vin and dinner att Red donkey (L'Âne Rouge). Look for the indigenous course
in VsV and the wine-by-glass from small independent producers and you cannot
go far wrong.
