Betsy made curry crusted pork tenderloin with a fruit (plum and peach I
think) chutney, with chard and brown rice. Not exactly wine friendly, there was enough heat I reached for a Riesling, the 2005 Mönchhof (Robert Eymael) "Mosel Slate" Riesling Spätlese. I usually am wary of Old World wines that use brand name designations rather than appelation based, but as Claude Kolm had said good things about this I had gotten one. I think I'll get more. The sweetness of the Spätlese countered the spiciness of the pork, and the peach and lime flavors of the Riesling melded well with the fruit-meets-heat&spice of the chutney. Good finish, with some slatey mineral notes to give the name credibility. Good value at $15. B+/B Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency. |
