I keep the site backed up on the computer in case there is a problem with the server that causes data loss. I can supply you with either a CD of the backup or put it up for ftp download, using your ftp agent, in case you need it. When the site is complete, I would like to supply a backup copy to one or more other people associated with the group so that it is not lost if I become unavailable. |

One other thing I've noted: Google doesn't index the site, although other sites in your domain are indexed. Is this intentional? Mark Lipton |

Is this intentional? My first post did not show, so if there are 2 posts, that is the problem. My domains are both set up so that you must have a specific page, or sometimes directory, url to get in. Try http://www.cwdjr.net/ and http://www.cwdjr.info/ . Thus search engine bots are locked out from doing a general domain search. The reason is that I have a large amount of media that uses up to several Gb per page, and I do not want to support the huge bandwidth that could result if these pages could be found without knowing the complete page url. However, if you will search while signed into the group for posts in that group, using the general domain url, then some references will come up. These sometimes creep into the general search engine files with time. If this becomes a problem, once the FAQ site is nearly complete, I may be able to put the FAQ on a separate subdomain that will allow full indexing. This would cost me no more, and I am entitled to about 3 of these lower level domains on my host's plan. |

Is this intentional? Yes. It depends on how you search. I have a lot of private media on my sites that use a huge amount of bandwidth. I do not want all of the excessive bandwidth that results from these media pages coming up in a general site search. Thus, I have set up so that you cannot get into the site unless you know a specifc directory or page. Try to directly get into my domains using http://www.cwdjr.net/ or http://www.cwdjr.info/ . You will get a message that they are private sites and "Bye". Even adding the directory level usually is not enough. This is likely why you can not get in on a Google search, as I won't let their search bots in the front door to do a general search of all of my directories and pages. However, when signed into this group, you will find that some of the specific pages concerning wine come up in a Google group search(at least when you use Google Groups to read the group), because the url was mentioned in some thread. After a time, some of these NG page references sometimes creep into general search engine searches; sometimes not. I might be able to set up a special subdomain that will let search engines in the front door for it. After the FAQ site is more complete, this might be something to think about. |

Once the FAQ reaches a stable version, I'll start auto-posting it, probably once monthly, and post a mini-FAQ on a weekly basis. In both posts, I'll link to the website so that should help increase traffic to it. Also, IIRC, Google works by following links on other sites, so as links to it appear elsewhere, Google should start indexing it. Mark Lipton |

We got a lot in Sept and Oct when the development of the FAQs was very active, but not many in Nov when there was a lull in adding new FAQs. Thus I assume most of the hits were coming from people who were reading the group. I have just created a new domain just for the FAQs. This is a third level domain that depends on the general domain of my host, and cost me nothing extra. It will take up to about a week for the domain name to propagate around the world. However it can be reached now using numbers. You can see this site by going to http://72.41.212.112/ . Within several days you can use the name of wineFAQ.hostexcellence.com instead of the numbers. This site allows full access of the pages to search engine bots. In several days, after the names can be used instead of numbers, I can submit the site to 13 search engines from the control panel of my host's server with the click of one button. The old site will stay up for a while, and finally a redirect to the new site will be used. It is nearly frightening how easy it is to create a new domain - it took me about a minute. My host will cut you off if you use it for spam, porn, or illegal activities in general. However there are hosts in some parts of the world who do not care what you put up as long as they get paid, and they may be rather expensive if they allow spam, porn, etc sites. They can delete an old domain and create a new one in about one minute when too many ISPs block the old domain. |

A real title may help with getting a more meaningful > indexing when that comes... Thanks. The title got lost at some revision, likely when I was changing it. This has now been corrected. The index page for the new domain is under construction. It is loaded with meta tags containing key words, etc for search engine bots to pick up. Many now look more at titles and a bit of text rather than just meta tags. |

The name of the site, that is http://wineFAQ.hostexcellence.com/ ,has now taken effect for me, but it may not yet for some of you. This association of a name with the numbers can take place at different times in different parts of the US and other countries around the world. You enter at a standard index page that now includes only the FAQ pages as on the original domain. |
