To Western standards, yes, this is a city of about 8 million people.
To Chinese standards, this is a small, developing city. I have seen
quite a bit of some of the wines mentioned here in Shanghai, but no
where near the South where I am. More specifically, I live in the
workshop of the world: Guangdong province, Dongguan City.

Many people ask me, why not go over to Hong Kong to look for wines.
The answer is simple...it's more expensive than here in most cases.

My wife brought home from Cyprus a couple of bottles of Othello. This was
about 1982 and the vintages were 1976 and 1959... Price about 2USD for
the -59 which I opened 1986. An amazingly good and youthful(!) wine :-)

Jon,
So far one of the better ones we have tried was a purchase at Trader
Joe's - La Bocca Malbec from Argentina. A far cry from other Malbecs
but definitely good for more casual drinking.

Tom,
TJ can't sell wine in my state (PA), but I'll see if I can find that in the
wine shops across the border I frequent.

I'm fairly new to malbecs and I've only tried 3 or 4 so far. My favorite so
far is the '04 Bodega Catena Zapata. It ran about $18, but well worth it.

Regards,
Jon

Jon,
The La Bocca was not your typical Argentine Malbec - light on the
tannins but easily drinkable and an okay intro to Malbecs. La Bocca
also had a Merlot, Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc - none of which I
would rank as very good.

I have not tried the Bodega Cantena Zapata yet - but I will look for
that.
Thanks,
Tom AZ

OK, at $7.99 a bottle, the 2004 Bodegas San Alejandro Las Rocas
Garnacha Calatayud is probably not just the least expensive I've
enjoyed but also one of the best all around wines I've enjoyed. Very
delightful!! My mundane taste buds highly recommend it!!

A Spanish wine from Jumilla;
Mahler-Besse's Taja. $12 Canadian. Can't beat that.
