Age of Wine Tasting Notes 6th February 2008
my good friends Geoff's pension lunch notes by Rowland H, I concur, and add that the VT was my wine of the lunch followed by the Taylors. 2004 Chablis, Alain Gautheron (Magnum) Pale yellow and bright. Flinty nose that was not very revealing. Fruit and acid which I felt hadn't really come together yet. Wondered whether in the magnum a little more time was needed. 2001 Trimbach Riesling, Cuvee Frederic Emile Viscous rich straw coloured wine with wonderful legs. Rich petrol/chemical nose typical of Riesling. Wonderful balanced fruit on entry, long and thoroughly enjoyable. 2004 Corton-Charlemagne, Grand Cru, Bonneau du Martray Pale straw coloured and bright. Buttery nose. Restrained fruit on entry with a very dry finish. Not ready yet I think nor as meaty as I had anticipated. Did not get the massive hit from the richness that I expected from such an excellent wine. 1996 Clos Vougeot, Grand Cru. Domaine du Vieux Engel First sample corked. Moderate depth with slightly pale rim. Bright and good looking. Soft entry with good fruit and balancing acidity. Medium length. Drink now. 1995 Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Domaine du Vieux Telegraph Deep dark red not quite purple. Very fruity with heat and a hint of euthymol. Lovely entry with rich fruit balance by elegant tannins. Very long. Super wine. Will keep a while yet. 1988 Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac Looks great in the glass. Bright, deep red, lots of legs. Very complex and elegant nose, spice and blackcurrants. Smooth entry with fruit and balanced tannin. Very nice mouthful but a little short with tannin predominating. Not sure that it is ready yet. 1995 Chateau Rieussec. Sauternes. Pale golden, very viscous, lots of legs. Rich fragrant honey and citrus nose. On entry lots of fruit balanced by acidity but as JT comment a lack of botrytis. Will it make it given time? 1977 Taylors Vintage Port Dark red with great depth. Rich fruity nose with great appeal. Sweet rich with tannin and balancing acidity. Lovely wine drinking now and for some years yet. -- John T |
