Default Vinum (California) Petite Sirah

So sad, I found a Vinum 2000 Petite Sirah that had been hiding
in my cellar. It probably would have been good 6 years ago, but
it ended up going down the drain.

Too bad. Really oxidized, or just washed out?
I think even the bigger PS do best young, tannins and all.
Now go check that cellar for more forgotten wines, you might not be
too late for all!

I can only describe the wine as bad and nasty - even after letting it
breathe for a couple of hours, with frequent samplings.
OMG, I just discovered a Vinum 2002 Chenin Blanc. I'll open that
bottle very soon and give a full report.

I am a big fan of PS, and have had some really good experiences with
their aging, though I don't usually try to age some of the current
fruit bombs. I have one bottle left of HopKiln's last PS before they
pulled the vines - hundred year old vines, and a varietal going out of
style... 1989. I had the next to last a few years ago, and I'm looking
forward to this one. Another case that has aged well was the Concannon
100th anniversary bottling. Sadly there are no more of them.

I thought the Concannon was one of the best Petite Syrah's on the
market. I recently drank a 2002 Markham that was OK and I still have
a few bottles of Turley PS in my cellar that need to be opened.

I'm not sure you can ever say that as I don't know that I have ever
had a Turley PS that was ready to drink. I have a few as well and am
in no hurry to open them. What vintages are you talking about?

Jim, my cellar list also shows one bottle of 1989 Hop Kiln PS, but I'm
not sure where it may be lurking. Hope it is still there, as I expect
it would be in great shape.

I recall one of my faves, a 1975 Freemark Abbey PS that I drank at
around age 25 that was lovely - and finally maturing!

Dick R. - I have never been impressed with Vinum - a second rank
producer making early drinking wines. They have the right approach, a
couple of UC Davis graduates wanting to make artisanal wines, but so
far seem to be spending too much time thinking up snappy marketing
names and grabby labels. Of course I don't get their wines much up
here in Canada, so they may be making some killer stuff that I am
totally unaware of.

A serious PS will last much longer than your 2000 did. If you like
the grape, it would be worth searching out some other more serious
producers ) there aren't as many as there used to be). Maybe start
with Foppiano, Concannon, Guenoc and move up from there. I'm sure
others here can suggest others.....

Hey Bill,
I've never seen Vinum in any liquor stores in Minnesota. We have spent
many summers in Hayward, WI, and while there we take a little drive to
the town of Stone Lake. There's a gentleman there who used to sell
antiques in a nice log building. He recently converted the building to real
estate offices, but still sells wine stored in a wonderful dirt floor
basement cellar. He spends his summers in Wisconsin and winters in Florida,
and stocks his cellar with cases of wine. It's always fun to walk past the
office, go down to the basement, swing open the bank vault door, and peruse
his wine selections. We always purchase a few bottles.

1995, 1996, 1997, 2000. I agree that they are huge but my last
bottle....a '97 was actually showing some age.

I still have all of the 96 through 2007 Turley PS in the wine closet and
the '96, '97, '98 are all showing well.

I have the 97 Aida, Hayne and Rattlesnake. If anyone has any idea when
these will be ready to try, please speak up!

I think the Rattlesnake and Aida are ready as I have had them in the
last 6 months and both were good. I don't have the Hayne so I can't
comment on it. The tannins were still a bit big on the Rattlesnake but
were pretty smooth.

I wold agree and add that the Hayne could use a bit more time but is
drinking well right now. It's still quite tannic but is quite
balanced and concentrated..what you would expect from a Turley.
