Default Chef Gordon Ramsey in Melbourne

Swearing is industry language. For as long as we're alive it's not
going to change. You've got to be boisterous to get results.
Gordon Ramsay

Melbourne, Australia (06-06-09)

I got to watch Chef Gordon Ramsey in action very recently and I was
very impressed by his actions that speak a lot louder than his words.
A lot of people attack Chef Ramsey because he does have a foul mouth
at times and they fail to see that for him its a part of the culture
and where hes from to speak in the fashion that he does. In my
meeting with him, I found him to be very down to earth and friendly
and even charming and passionate man that cares deeply for other
people and I came away with a deep admiration for the man that he is.

At a recent Food and Wine convention, after speaking with Mr. Ramsey,
I got to watch him work. There were hundreds of people lined up to
get an autograph and as I stood to the side and thought to myself, it
must be tiring to stand and greet hundreds of people, he worked
tirelessly.

One young lady in a wheelchair showed up late and was off to the side
of the cue and her eyes were lit up with excitement as she looked
fondly over at Chef Ramsey. The security told the young lady she had
to go and sit at the other side so she wasnt at the exit where people
left. The people in line continued to file past until just a few
moments before Chef Ramsey had to leave for his scheduled cooking
demonstration in the Celebrity Theatre. Unfortunately not everybody
in the line got a chance at this time to have their books signed and
Chef Ramsey started to leave and as he walked past the front of the
cue, a lady in the line roughly grabbed his arm and I heard Gordon
say, Im sorry but I have to go and speak to my most important fan.
And he pulled his arm away from her.

The young lady in the wheelchair turned to look behind her wondering
who this most important fan was and while she was doing that, Chef
Ramsey walked up to her and crouched down next to her. It suddenly
dawned on her now that the Chef was speaking of her and a complete
look of wonder and awe swept her face as she looked directly into the
eyes of the infamous man whose books and television shows had brought
her so much enjoyment as he asked her, What is your name love?

For the next two minutes, Chef Ramsey spoke with, Felicity and all
eyes were on them as this transaction of communication took place
during which he signed her book and commented on her choice of books,
Cooking for Friends. Felicity said that it was her favorite book
and I heard the Chef reply back that it was his also.

I hid myself in food.
Gordon Ramsay

Some people who work in Food Service do so because they have a
passion for serving other people and Chef Gordon Ramsey displayed by
his actions in front of me that he understood what this means. For
the few moments that he shared with, Felicity, it would make a
lifetime of meaning to her that he took the time to make sure this
young lady knew just how important she was. I have no doubt that it
meant more to Felicity then it did all the other people in the cue,
you could tell just by looking into the beautiful smile that lit an
entire convention centre.

It occurred to me that Mr. Ramsey gets it and the fruits of his
labor are the evidence as he elevated the spirit of this young lady
simply by spending a moment of his time. In that sense more people
should be as down to earth and caring as Chef Ramsey. After he signed
her book, before they parted she told Chef Ramsey, It was a pleasure
meeting you Chef. and he replied, No, the pleasure was all mine.
The young lady in her wheelchair was beside herself and when the Chef
walked off, she thanked all the security staff for arranging the
meeting. She said, You dont know just how much that meant to me.
But I could tell by the look in the staffers eyes that he did

Its in the press that Gordon is arrogant and I can tell you by our
conversation and watching him at the Food and Wine Festival that the
things he said about other people were just jokes done to try and
entertain people and while I personally dont subscribe to his dry
British humor, I understood he was just trying to funny.

Anybody that has watched his shows knows that he has brought dozens
of people back from the brink of disaster and probably prevented
thousands of cases of food poisoning by raising awareness, standards
and in general, just plain common sense. Ive seen firsthand that he
has an honest desire to serve people by increasing self-confidence and
pride in everyday jobs and I could only wish that more Christians took
as much pride in making the world a better place as Chef Ramsey does.

He does get passionate and use explicit language when he sees people
with practices that place their unknowing customers in literal mortal
danger and had I eaten at some of the establishments hes shown on
television, Id consider suing those people but thank goodness the
Chef does care and is passionate, we need more people like him that do
care about the products being put out. The world would be a better
place if more people shared his compassionate nature.

I don't care about how he acts on tv, but I have no doubt he swears
for shock value and ratings. If he wanted to change, he would.

Does Gordon have PR? I guess this is their way of excusing his verbal
assault on that female reporter in Australia.

Verbal assault? I find it interesting how hypocritical the Australian
press is. Every week on "Good News Week" the host (Paul McDermott)
shreds people of every walk of life, especially Christians and never a
word is said about it. Gordon Ramsey cracks a JOKE about a "news
reader" and the Prime Minister gets involved?

Americans (or as they call us on free to air television in Australia
"Yanks") are usually a favored target in the media. Australians just
can't handle a non-Australian making a joke about one of their own...

No, but because he has a foul mouth at ALL times. It's habitual; he
exhibits no control over what his mouth puts out. There is a place for
profanity, but Ramsey knows no place.

Have you ever worked in a commercial kitchen? I mean a real one, where a 2
hour lunch run might bring in $2000.00?

I have worked on more polite construction sites.

You know, Good News Week is a comedy current affairs show which features
quite a bit of satire. You expect that people are going to get
"shredded", and as a fairly regular watcher I can't say that I've
noticed that Christians are more targeted than any other group.

Gordon Ramsay isn't a comic, he's not a satirist, he was appearing at a
food and wine show, as a celebrity chef, and presenting to an audience
there because they were interested in his food, his cookbooks etc. If
the reports in the paper are accurate he showed a picture of a woman
with a pig's face and multiple breasts - regardless of who he compared
that to, what on earth did it have to do with cooking??? Why would he
even think of showing that??

And really - calling someone a pigwoman? How is that funny - what was
the punch line? Where was the joke exactly? Is there some porcine
connection with the woman in question that I'm unaware of?

I guess he came prepared, or he just habitually carries around pictures
like that in the event it might come in handy.

I don't know what the history is, but it seems like something that would
be killer hilarious in the 5th grade boys bathroom.

I'm not sure about that.. Even the Prime Minister of Australia called
him a "low life" for his joke. To me it looks like he's being
unfairly targeted for making a joke about an Australian because he's
not Australian.

I don't agree with Gordon's foul mouth but I posted because I think he
was unfairly treated.

Maybe Kevin Rudd should be calling you a "low life" for your slander.
No, I'm not a troll, I'm just a guy who doesn't rush to judgment about
other people just because they make a joke in poor taste.

I suppose you've never done that, right Peter. Never made a joke
about somebody famous...

Hypocrite.

Well maybe not quite *that* expensive, but yes.

And the only thing that made the volatile chef's foul language more
bearable (and sometimes laughable - although none of us would crack a
smile in his presence unless he thought he was telling a joke) was
that he was French.

Not that he swore in French that I know of, but his accent somehow
made the English swear words sound more posh.

>I have worked on more polite construction sites.

Now that you mention I have never worked on a construction site where
the atmosphere was anywhere near as intense as a few hours a
sweltering commercial kitchen. And I'm thankful I haven't.

And there might have been some disagreements and a couple of fist
fights on Class A construction sites when someone "borrowed" someone
else's tools or did something stupid and dangerous. But no knife
fights like the one between chef and a Filipino dishwasher.

At least human blood is easy to wash off stainless steel ...

It was all hushed up and the dishwasher quietly paid off by the hotel
BTW.

Comparing someone to an old ugly pig is a joke? Must have lost my
sense of humour somewhere.

Tracey Grimshaw interviewed Gordon Ramsey and laughed along at him
poking fun at her. Shae also complied with his *no personal questions*
demand. The next day he slagged her off to his audience and also
speculated about her sexuality.

Nonsense. Australians are pretty good at sending ourselves up, just
look at any od our comedy.

I am thoroughly sick of people using the "it was only a joke" mantra

"Sending ourselves up" Yes and everybody else for that matter as we
see in your media on a weekly bases on "Good News Week" but heaven
forbid a non-Australian cracks a joke about one of your "mates".
Every week Paul McDermot and his crew make nasty remarks about "Yanks"
and "Christians" and even Jesus and I didn't see the Prime Minister
calling him a low life.

Take a look in the mirror first then and try a little self
reflection. Are you really any better then Chef Ramsey that your
Prime Minister has the right to call it's visitors "Low lifes"?

Let's be clear here.. I'm not defending the Chef's jokes here but
aren't we all just big hypocrites with "tall poppy" syndrome? How is
calling Ramsey a low life any better then his comments? It doesn't
represent Australia well that your Prime Minister thinks it's his job
to speak about the Chef for you as a people making comments like that.
His actions makes you look like a racist banana republic.

How is dragging up alleged affairs and rumor mongering representing
you as something better?

Give me a break ------ Fact is Ramsey even if a visitor
was just plain egotistical ,rude and did not behave as a visitors
normally do .
Ramsey appears a prize ****** and I do not care if he is a decent chef
he still comes over as an arsehole if he cops a spray from anyone
fair game I reckon . I also doubt he needs any apologists he acts as
though he can dish it out there fore he should be able to cop it back .

Bull Dust it does --------- only to you perhaps .
Actually a lot bigger fish to fry and possibly only a politician trying
to score some points .Thus you are part right but for perhaps the wrong
reasons.
Better if he gave Burma or Zimbabwe a spray in my book

They are comedians and it is satire. Gordon Ramsey is a chef slinging
nasty comments around.

One of our TV shows here (Chaser's war on everything) has taken flack
this week for a particularly poor taste stunt.

I do not need to look in the mirror. I do not sling horrible comments
around and then run for cover yelling "It was just a joke". What the
Prime Minister says when asked an off cuff question is his own
business. If you are asking "Are you really any better then Chef
Ramsey" to me personally, then yes I am a hell of a lot better than
Gordon Ramsey because I am not a foul mouthed nasty bully.

As far as I know the Prime Minister has not stood up and spoken for
the people of Australia on this matter. He has spoken his personal
opinion.

I do not think Kevin Rudd has the idiocy market covered in terms of
leaders, one onl;y has to look at the sorry thing that was your last
president, talk about foot-in-mouth disease.

Tracey Grimshaw did not do that. The press is now circling like sharks
and he is fair game because he expects them to respect his privacy
while he feels free to make offensive comments about individuals of
the press.

You completely failed to address the beginning of my post about what
he said, and that there was no provocation.

Sometimes on Usenet you get a feel
about some ones first post you see .

Reckon you better stick your opinions about Australia right up your
clacker
since you are posting FROM Australia

And take you hand off it . Looking at some of your posts
maybe your Missionary zeal as a pastor (as you call yourself)
would be more welcome in West Bank or Lebanon and far more
educational for you And take Ramsey with you

You have called people hypocrites yet a very brief look at some of
your posts
show you to be an attention seeking bigot yourself (IMO)

The sly way of introducing this Ramsey ****** to push your own barrow
was not the best call PASTOR [sic] and your certainly did not look
like a
Pastors post .

One other poster called you a god botherer to me your just a
bother
with an axe to grind -why not just come out and say you dont like
where you live and cut the crap .

Back to food here have a few slabs of pork and a good look at your
self

Happiness would be observing the good "Pastor" Guardian Snow swimming
out of Sydney heads
with Ramsey and Kevin Rudd under each arm

You know, the thing is Australia isn't a third world banana republic
and it has a lot of wonderful people in it. I don't have an "axe to
grind", I just wonder why the media has two standards, one for
Australians and one for anybody else. This isn't your fault but the
fact that it's considered acceptable behaviour but RACISM is
troubling.

Now I can respond in kind to your remarks about sticking my post "up
my cracker" but then I would be at your level and I have no need to
be. I'm attempting to have intelligent conversations with rational
people and hopefully, that's you and the others that have posted.

At least you have a good sense of humor, it seems you of all people
should understand Ramsey better then me.

Mmm, maybe! Perhaps he has a selection of various animals which he picks
from depending on his mood! :-)

There you go! He uses them like flashcards to make up for his
rather limited vocabulary. Heh.

nancy (doesn't really care about him one way or another)

The one pic he doesn't carry is of a shar pei.

If he brought that out, the audience would think it was a baby pic of him!!!

Actually, Michael, although I agree with you about GR the man as he
presents himself, many of his recipes are excellent. I make several of
them and by the time you tidy up the "mistakes" they are as good a
resource as any I know. WAY better than the majority I've seen from
Michelin rated chefs here in France, by the way.
