1989 Ch. Puy Blanquet (St. Emilion) – a modest wine at a modest price
that had hidden in the cellar for some years. A pleasant surprise when we opened it – a fruit and cedar nose, not terribly notable, but on palate, decent fruit, no doubt now declining, and sift tannins that gave interest to the texture, and good terminal acidity that gave a lively impression. This wine performed above its modest price class, a very pleasant surprise after all these years. |

1989 was a great year for Bordeaux. I have several bottles of an even more
modest St. Emilion from this vintage, Ch. Simard. These type wines, from a great vintage, age very well and perform as you say "above it's modest price class."
