This morning I tasted a very nice CalCab from a little Paso Robles winery
called Firefly. Mid to full bodied, black cherry & currant notes, medium tannins, and decent length. As a reference point that many of you will be familiar with, I would put this several points above Beringers KV offering. In fact, its probably as good or better than 80% of $20 to $30 Cal CS's I've tasted from the last 5 vintages. This could be laid down for 5 or so years and would likely improve. Whats the big deal you ask? I picked this up for $8.99, and that is not a sale price. Its the best quality to price ratio calcab I've ever tasted. Only the lower priced zin's (Ravenswood's vintners for example) come close in QPR. I'm going to buy 1 more bottle to make sure I didn't get a single freakishly good bottle from the batch, and then buy a couple of cases. - AS -- "There comes a time in every honest man's life when he feels the need to hoist the black flag and start slicing throats." - H.L.
