Coincidentally after the recent discussion around Cherie's trip,
(which I didn't participate in as I wasn't around, but where she
got lots of useful advice to which I will only add: go to Cornas,
visit Marcel Juge, it's right on the Place), Adele brought a bottle
of this home from the supermarket. Price 5=A479, fair enough I
suppose, given the usual available range of coop wines (Rasteau,
Vacqueyras, Beumes de Venise, Visan) there. =20

Nose a little over-ripe, maybe even oxydized, simple and plummy.
In the mouth an immediate impression of meat and lard, followed=20
by the usual dark fruit, a little pepper, smoke. Decent length, it
went well with a papillote de veau stuffed with smoked ham and
dried tomatoes. All in all a classic enough Crozes, if a little thin
and undistinguished, at a reasonable price.

As is well known in this forum I'm no great fan of the coop at Tain,
as I consider their production a little but ho-hum. But I do agree
that it's a good place to get an introduction to the various wines of
the northern rhone. (Also it's not very typical of the usually warm
and friendly tasting experience of the Rhone Valley...)

Off topic: Dale, happened to listen to a recording of Gary Hoffman
playing the Shostakovitch Op 40 over dinner. Less heavy handed
than he can be at times, nicely done I thought. I wonder if Betsy
plays this, or if she's heard the Hoffman version?

cheers,

-E

Shaddup, Mike. I just read the post and was about to kill and correct it, again.

Sigh, there really are such days... P-A-U-P-I-E-T-T-E !!! The first was a slip
of the tongue, at least I managed to spell it right. Now you see why I'm an
infrequent poster on frbv.

I've usually found the co-op Crozes to be a good (though never outstanding)
version of the appelation; most of the attraction is that it's usually cheaper
than any other Crozes (and offers more character most years than the Jaboulet
Jalets bottling or Delas Freres).

Is Op. 40 a sonata or a concerto? I forgot which work you mentioned, but asked
her last night re Hoffman. She hadn't heard any new recordings by him , but did
say that he plays upon a truly gorgeous instrument (it used to belong to
Leonard Rose, her old teacher).

Does it just say Hermitage? Seems to me I remember that they often have 2
bottlings (one is Belle Rives or the like)? I have liked some of their
Hermitages- for the price - before. Never going to mistake for JL Chave, but
sometimes they're priced closer to a top Crozes. But don't remember tasting a
'98.

Well, it was at end of his career, and he might not have been at his best. Her
real mentor was Paul Katz of the Cleveland.
