Default Labels and lead times; was: Back Label Information

A point not touched upon in the earlier thread is how far in advance a
winery must order labels. Is it possible that sometimes orders must be
placed before the winery knows the parameters of a particular wine
with sufficient accuracy to allow putting the information on the
label? Perhaps this might explain some (certainly not all) omissions
of information we would like to see on a label. I am clueless here.

We had a young lady in this group some years back, Jo Diaz if memory
serves, who worked for one of the holding companies that own a lot of
wineries in California. She had previously worked for a commercial
design and print company that specialized in wine labels. When she
found out that I collected them, she sent me a hundred or so of their
design. Any way she told me that they could go from idea to design to
printed labels in a week. Of course the winery has to get their labels
approved by the BATF.

I can't speak to the lead time for a winery, but I can tell you about
the hoops one must go through for the back import label: if you do
everything right, you can get your label federally approved in about 2
weeks. However, it's quite a trick to do everything right. A 70-ish
page guideline trick. So if you get any little thing wrong, then add
in the time to fix it and another 2 week wait. This is why most back
labels on wines imported tend to have just the basics...why risk
getting rejected because some word in the blurb (say, quoting a
vintner who calls his wine "spritzy and springy", when it is not a
sparkling wine, and the government here feels that would mislead the
consumer...just as an example of course) I don't think many business
types are willing to risk adding weeks and weeks to sell time just so
that they can add this information. Just a guess.

It is not uncommon to bottle wines and have them lying around a year or two
before sending off to buyers... Most will have plenty opportunity to put on
labels during that time.

Why do you care? I mean, this so trivial. Just drink, taste, and post some
notes. Wine is not rocket surgery. Get the joke?

Maybe I'm slow but no, I don't get it.
