How do you measure the temperature of wine in the bottle (which is
another way of saying the temperature of the bottle, which I realize
may not be the same as the temperature of the wine)?

I am not trying to be funny, but simply trying to match the practical
aspects of attempting to serve wines at specified temperatures with
the conventional wisdom that specifies at what temperature certain
wines will be best served.

Of course, I can get wines to 0C/32F by placing them in an ice bath.
But how do you know, for example, that your wine is at, say, 45F?

Never done that, and never felt the need to. Whites come out of
the fridge. I have a thermometer both in my cellar and in the
dining room. When I need to cool whites fast, I let them in
running cold water in the basin in the bathroom. We are fortunate
enough, here in Vienna, to have tap water that is around 8°C
(46°F) in winter and 10°C (50°F) in summer.

Simple. There's a liquid crystal plastic strip thermometer which you place
around the bottle.

Some time ago in California, I saw a thin plastic band being sold at wine
dealers which had liquid crystal areas (each bearing temperature numbers)
that became visible at different temperatures. The band was designed to be
wrapped around a bottle. I don't know who made it or if it is still being
sold. But, someone thought of your concept.

Back about 1981, I purchased 5,000 of those thermometers to give away at
conventions with our company name on them. At that time the retail price
was less than $5us and they were on a metal sleve. Those liquid crystal
strips are pretty but they seldom work more than 7 or 8 months. I had
one (1) that lasted 5 years.
