TN: Alsace and Beaujolais
I was in charge of dinner Monday, while Betsy was scheming with a friend from a blind dinner they have planned next month. Monday is supposed to be meatless, not really my forte, but I did ok with a quick vegetable soup from Jacques Papin and a soba/broccoli rabe/garlic stir fry. Wine was the
2007 Gerard Schueller "Particuliere" Riesling (Alsace). Bone dry, lots of acid, flavors of citrus and slightly unripe peach. Rather sharp-edged, but went well with food, some slatey notes on finish, not bad for $10. B/B-
Last night Betsy made herbed salmon, wheatberry and white bean salad, and Brussels sprouts. I said wine could go either way, she chose red. The 2007 Domaine les Roches des Garants (Jean Paul Champagnon) "Les Moriers" Fleurie. I seldom buy Beaujolais from an unknown producer, but I like 2007 and I've liked Moriers from Chignard, so bit for a single bottle (actually 3 as part of a mixed case, but I was splitting with 2 friends). I got about what I deserved - a drinkable but unexceptional Fleurie. Lots of strawberry at first, flavors deepen/darken with air to darker berries, a little earth. Medium acidity, no tannins, clean but a little short. Acceptable for $15. B-
Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
