Monterey Peninsula Winery Monterey Cabernet 1976 contains 96% CS, 2%
Petite Sirah and 2% Zinfandel and has 12% alcohol. The fill was still in the neck, and the cork was sound. This wine is completely mature but likely will hold a few more years. It is a very big, highly extracted wine somewhat in the style of David Bruce in the 70s, although it does not have an excessive and hot alcohol content. The color still is deep with a bit of age showing around the rim. There is good fruit with cassis and plums. There is a touch of herbal character that is somewhat of a leaf character - quite different from a typical Napa CS. The tannins are now medium and resolved. The bouquet is intense. The finish is long. I have had Zinfandel from the 70s from this winery. It was an even larger and more extracted wine than this CS, and it was not far behind David Bruce 70s Zinfandel in size. |
