Has anyone had any problems with off odors using some of these new
rubber bungs? I've recently purchased them from several suppliers, but they all seem to have a very strong rubber smell. It is so strong that after removing the bung on a carboy of wine, the only thing I could smell was the rubber bung. My concern is that they will leave off odors/tastes in the finished wine. Anyone else have similar concerns? |

if your smelling it from the bung hole, it is likely that it is just
the glass or wood you are smelling that has taken on the rubber smell, and not the wine. I use the rubber as well and the bunghole smells, but the wine is fine (no contact of rubber to wine). After the rubber ages a bit it should stop smelling, I would suppose. Jon wrote: > Has anyone had any problems with off odors using some of these new > rubber bungs? I can;t resist --- "if you're smelling it from the bung hole".
Just as well we're amongst friends here! ;-) > if your smelling it from the bung hole, it is likely that it is just > the glass or wood you are smelling that has taken on the rubber smell, > and not the wine. Some lots of rubber or from manufacturers will smell different. My adsvise
is to smell bungs from different suppliers and choise your favorite. Maybe you can leach out the odor ( which may come from plasticizers in the rubber) by simmering in hot water. Another option is to wrap the bungs in Syran wrap before inserting. Don't let the raw rubber touch the wine. It is a funny thread title.....
Is this white, green or black? I only use white bungs for wine, I never thought the black was for food contact. Mine never smell. Joe Lou wrote: > Some lots of rubber or from manufacturers will smell different. My adsvise > is to smell bungs from different suppliers and choise your favorite. |
