I need to make something for hanging through the small bung hole (35 mm
diameter) of my 30 liter barrel so that I can burn sulfur sticks in there. I would like to make this as fool proof as possible ie. so I can't accidently dump the contents into the barrel. Any suggestions for what to use? Thanks Brian |

Hanging the wick in the bunghole by a piece of wire works, but you will likely get sulfur drips on the bottom of the barrel. If you ever use that barrel for a fermenter you're **guaranteed** to get H2S formed during the fermentation. IOW, your candle holder needs to have some sort of drip catcher, unless you only use the barrel for finished (dry) reds. Tom S |

I have only a couple of years experience sulfuring chard barrels without "drip catchers," but in those couple of years we haven't had H2S problems in our barrel fermented chards. We tend to have more H2S problems in the tank fermented chards. Dave ************************************************** ************************** Dave Breeden |

<< Hanging the wick in the bunghole by a piece of wire works, but you will
likely get sulfur drips on the bottom of the barrel. >> Tom, it depends on which kind of sulfur stick you use. There are two kinds I have tried, one thick and one thin. The thick ones (the thickness of a piece of cardboard) do drip when burned so you have to employ a drip catcher. I bought a small stainless steel device from my local wine supply store but never really liked it. Sulfur drips build up in the bottom and are hard to clean out. The thin ones (the thickness of heavy card stock) don't drip. I have been sulfuring barrels with the thin ones for ten years using the wire through the bung method and never had a drip. Eric T. |

Ok guys , here is a REALLY simple way .
Turn the barrel UPSIDE-DOWN and then burn your wicks . The heat and gasses rise , any drips drip on the floor ( or your hand <GRIN> ) Greg "Gr8pluvr" > wrote in message ... > << Hanging the wick in the bunghole by a piece of wire works, but you will > likely get sulfur drips on the bottom of the barrel. >> > > > Tom, it depends on which kind of sulfur stick you use.
