Default Poor mans Champaign

I read a long time ago that something resembleing champaign could be made
using apple cider.
It seems like the suggestion was to put a sugar cube and a couple raisins in
each bottle.

There must be a lot more to it. Has anyone heard of such a thing? Thanks.
